Report on CBSE Capacity Building Program-‘Career Guidance’

A workshop was organised by the Centre of Excellence, CBSE on the 10th & 11th of March 2023 at Edify school, Kanakapura main road, Bengaluru. The session was on Capacity Building in Career Guidance to empower teachers and equip them with skills to help students choose their careers wisely. Dr. Mahesh Kadakkalakath, Principal, Babuji International School, Bagalkot and Ms.Manjula A, Principal Bhavan, Bangalore Press school, Bangalore presided over as the Resource Person. As many as 40 teachers from CBSE-affiliated schools attended the workshop.
The workshop comments with the lighting of the knowledge lamp. Our grade 7 & 8 students welcomed the guests with a heartfelt invocation song. Our Beloved Principal, Ms. Neelam Sharma extended a warm welcome to the Resource Persons and expressed her gratitude by giving them mementos. Throughout the day there were discussions revolving around the difference between a career and job; the thin line of difference between advice, guidance and counseling were also taken up. With various activities,the workshop turned out to be experiential and enriching for the teaching fraternity.
The resource person Dr. Mahesh Kadakkalakath emphasized on the drill of SWOT analysis to help the students in choosing an appropriate career in life and he updated the teachers about various career guidance options available on the CBSE website. Participants updated themselves through various activities and had a healthy discussion on various challenges. Tounderstand the topic better, various case stories were discussed for the participants to understand the various career paths that could be taken up by the students.
Ms.Manjula A recommended that schools should set up a career resource room in the school and the subject teachers should post updates related to the careers related to their subject. The basic requirements to set up a career resource room were discussed through an activity. Team building activities & role play were conducted to impart various career information. Strategies and resources used in imparting career information like career talks, career quizzes, career fairs, and individual projects, were discussed.
The final session dealt with career guidance for students with special abilities. The groups shared various career options available for people with learning disabilities like dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and with physical and mental disabilities.
This 14-hour session proved to be beneficial to the teachers to increase their knowledge about various career options. It equipped teachers with enough knowledge and methods to be able to guide students about various new-age careers and fields.
