FIELD TRIP OF GRADE 10 -NIMHANS

Memories of school Educational trips are among the most prominent of the formative years, largely because they are a welcome break in the routine for both students and teachers. While their purpose is essentially to educate, they can also be a fun bonding experience for everyone involved. The students of Grade X recently went on a field trip to NIMHANS, Bangalore, to know more about Brain and the Spinal cord. The trip helped to reinforce what a teacher has been instructing in class about a subject and helped the students understand the topic better.

The students started from the school at 8:30 a.m sharp in the school bus and reached the venue by 10:00 a.m. After the completion of all the formalities, the students entered the Neurobiology department of NIMHANS. As the field trip incharge had already informed the institute about the visit, an instructor was awaiting our visit.

The session started by the answering of a pre – assessment questionnaire. The students filled it and then the instructor went on to explain the structure and function of brain and kept clearing the doubts that students had. She explained the whole concept with the help of a very informative Ppt. After the completion of the theory session, the resource person for the day, Dr. Hemlatha, took the students to see the anatomy of the human brain, spinal cord, vertebral column, skull and other organs. She explained the structure of all the organs, and the students were allowed to touch, feel and see the organs with their own hands. This helped them in understanding the structure of the different organs that they had studied in school become clearer.

The curious minds and eyes wanted to gather maximum information and quench their thirst for knowledge.

After the anatomy session, the students went to see the museum, where they saw an electron microscope, MRI scans of normal and abnormal brain, etc. They also found out the differences between the structure of a healthy brain and a brain with tumors, multiple injuries, and other such problems. They also saw a 21 week old foetus, in which the brain did not develop properly, but all the other organs were normal.

The type of memories that Educational trips create, called “episodic memories,” which helps children retain information for longer periods. The students also gave a “Thank You” card to the resource person to mark their gratitude towards her and they came back to school very happy and feeling rejuvenated after such a memorable field trip.
