Field Trip Grade 8-10 -- ISRO Satellite Center

When the students reached the ISRO satellite stations, Mr. Srinivasan from ISRO introduced about ISRO. He explained about various types of rockets(PSLV & GSLV) and satellites (IRS & ICS) along with their uses like, cyclone prediction and fishing by locating schools of fish and communication.

Then the students were shown a video about the launching and the path of movement of Chandrayaan. And later they were shown the area where the scientists are currently working new satellite. Next they were taken on a tour to have a look at the models of the famous satellites like Chandrayaan, Aryabhatta, Rohini, Bhaskara etc. Various parts of the satellites and the pictures clicked by them were also exhibited.

Finally a doubt clarification session in which he told us that a satellite’s life span is 5-20 years and its speed 26000 per hour. These satellites are designed for single use and therefore not repaired or recycled. The satellites take 1 year or so to build while rockets take only 6 months. These satellites use centrifugal force and the fuel is used up when needed by Jet Propulsion. Otherwise they mainly use solar energy provided by the solar panels on both sides of the satellites. Earlier satellites needed lesser energy and therefore they had only one solar panel. To prevent imbalance a solar sail was put on the other side.

In the end Mr. Srinivasan concluded by giving career guidance tips as to how get into ISRO and the benefits of having the job there.

The whole trip was extremely interesting and useful as all the students gained invaluable knowledge about Satellites, Rockets and Space.
