    Field Trip Grade 8
    Bannerghatta Biological Park

As an extended learning activity on the topic “Conservation of plants and animals”, the students of grade VIII along with their HRT and Biology facilitator had an opportunity to go on a field trip to the Bannerghatta Biological Park on 10/11/2017. It is located about 22 Kms south of Bengaluru city and is one among the few places in the world where wilderness is preserved so close to a big city. It has different units such as Zoo, Safari, Butterfly Park and Rescue Center (Conservation of captive animals).

The main idea behind this field trip was a study on the conservation of animals and birds. Based on this, the children came across different species of macaques, zebras, bears, pythons, and cheetah. The main attraction was the close encounter with the Royal Bengal Tiger roaming about happily inside the cage. Apart from these, the Biological Park is home to different varieties of turtles, birds, crocodiles, wild dog, wild cat, etc. The students also visited the wildlife museum wherein they saw the models of different herbivorous and carnivorous animals displayed. These are real animals which are preserved using a special technique called Taxidermy for further studies.

Mr. Kushal, a biologist and Ms. Amba, an Education officer conducted an interactive session with the children settling their curiosities related to wildlife. Ms. Amba also showed a specimen of Python’s eggs, which was preserved in a jar. The children got very much excited to see the specimen. At the end, the resource persons shared details of about a 20 weeks’ workshop organized by Bannerghatta National Park for students to create awareness about conserving wildlife.

Through this field trip, the children understood the purpose of safeguarding and conserving our wildlife and extinct species and necessary steps taken to preserve them. They promptly recorded their reflections after coming back to school.
