    Field Trip to HAL Heritage Centre and Aerospace Museum, Bengaluru

      Understanding the properties of air allows people to make practical applications.

    As an extension of the learning activity of Inquiry Module 3 on the topic “How the World Works”, the students of Grade 3 (A, B, C, D) along with their HRTs had an opportunity to visit HAL Heritage Centre and Aerospace Museum, Bengaluru. The main aim of the visit was to show the students how air is utilized to move an aeroplane. The Museum also displays different types of aircrafts and their parts. There are two major halls, one displaying the photographs that chart the growth of aviation in each decade from 1940 till date. The second hall displays motorized cross section of models of aero engines, highlighting various functions of the engines.

    On the way, the children were very excited to visit the place as many of them were eager to see aeroplanes and their different parts. The journey to the place from the school was very long as we had to travel through the center of the city and the students were impatient and anxious to reach the destination.

    Once we entered inside the campus, we were warmly welcomed. We were taken to a room where we were shown a video on how the HAL grew up through various stages of aeroplane parts development and manufacturing.

    We visited the museum where different models of aircrafts were displayed. There was a true motion simulator to accentuate the user experience by giving a very realistic feel of flying fighter jets and commercial aircrafts. Some real engines such as Garret(Dornier), Adour(Jaguar) and Orpheus (Kiran) were displayed.

    Apart from this, an Orchidarium, herbal garden, children’s play area, a Souvenir shop and a sustainability development park are the added attractions in the campus. The sustainability park aims to educate visitors and students by displaying working models of solar systems, bio-gas plant and hybrid wind mills.

    We took a lot of photographs. The children were very excited seeing various aircraft parts, like the landing gear, actuators and cross-section of the engines.

    The children got amazed and wanted to spend more time there. At the end of the tour, the children completed their lunch in the school bus and finally started back. The students were well disciplined during their visit and maintained silence when they were in the facility. At the end of the visit, the students were very happy, and the field trip gave them a broad view on how an aeroplane works and what are the important parts of an aeroplane.
